Trailer Hire vs Skip Bin: Which Is Right?
Happy to do the tip run yourself, or would you rather the bin sat in your driveway? An honest comparison from the team that hires both.
We hire both cage trailers and skip bins from 2m³ to 7m³ across Christchurch and Canterbury, so we have no reason to push you the wrong way. Some jobs plainly suit the trailer; others plainly need a bin; a third group needs neither — a rubbish removal pickup or a single-item collection costs less than either. Here is how to choose.
Choose trailer hire when you like driving
The cage trailer suits garden waste, firewood collection, moving house gear across town, and tip runs where a car boot will not cut it. You need a vehicle with a tow bar rated for the loaded trailer and a current full licence — we run through coupling, lights and the safety chain before you leave our Hornby base. Hire runs Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 7:30pm, matching our operating hours.
Trailers win on flexibility: load at your pace, tip off at the transfer station, bring the trailer back. Dump fees at the gate are yours on top of the hire, and you do all the lifting, driving and queuing. For one or two modest loads of green waste or a firewood run, that trade usually pays.
Choose a skip bin when the pile keeps growing
Skips win the moment the waste outgrows a couple of trailer loads. A 2m³ mini skip already swallows a garden clean-up or shed clear-out; the 4.5m³ small takes a room of furniture; the 6m³ mid handles kitchen renovations; the 7m³ maxi takes full clearances. The bin sits in your driveway while you work — no repeated tip queues, no trailer to return mid-project.
Every bin has a rear door for walk-in loading, and our smaller trucks fit the narrow Christchurch driveways the big operators struggle with. If access is tight, mention it when you call 027 446 1253 and the driver will plan the drop.
The quick maths
- One small load, own time, tow vehicle ready: trailer hire usually cheapest.
- Several loads, a weekend project, or no tow bar: a skip bin wins on time alone — three tip runs eat a Saturday.
- One bulky item: neither. A single-item pickup for the couch, washer or mattress costs less than any hire.
- No bin, no driving: rubbish removal — we load and cart it away from anywhere in Canterbury.
Three questions to settle it
First, how much is there really? Walk the pile before you book — most people underestimate by half. Our guide to skip bin sizes translates jobs into cubic metres. Second, can you tow? No tow bar or only a restricted licence rules the trailer out. Third, when does the waste happen? A bin booked around your demo days beats a trailer sitting idle for a week.
Whatever you load, check what can go in a skip first — prohibited items apply to trailers at the transfer station gate too.
