Skip bin of building waste outside scaffolded houses

Ordering a skip bin feels simple until someone asks what size you want. Too small and you're staring at a full bin with half the job still on the lawn. Too big and you've paid for empty air. After delivering thousands of bins across Christchurch and Canterbury, here's how we think about sizing — and the four sizes we hire: 2m³, 4.5m³, 6m³ and 7m³.

Start with the job, not the number

Cubic metres mean nothing until you translate them into stuff. Picture your waste in trailer loads, roomfuls of furniture, or piles of branches. A garden tidy-up behaves nothing like a kitchen rip-out, even when the pile looks the same height — branches are mostly air, while gib board and timber stack dense and heavy.

Our rule of thumb: describe the job, not the volume. When you call 027 446 1253, tell us what you're clearing — "a single garage", "a kitchen and bathroom", "the whole back section" — and we'll match it to a bin. That conversation takes two minutes and beats guessing every time.

The four sizes, translated

The 2m³ mini skip handles garden clean-ups, a few bags of general waste and small shed clear-outs. It fits easily in a standard driveway and suits jobs you can finish in a weekend. If your pile is mostly green waste and household bags, start here.

The 4.5m³ small skip is the room-clear-out bin: a lounge of furniture, boxes plus old carpet, a bathroom or laundry strip-out. More than double the mini's volume on roughly the same driveway footprint, because the walls go up rather than out.

The 6m³ mid skip is our most hired size for a reason. Kitchens, bathrooms, medium building projects — anything where timber, gib and fixtures keep coming. If your job is bigger than one room but smaller than a whole house, the mid is the safest bet.

The 7m³ maxi skip is for full house clearances, major renovations and large building projects. When in doubt at the top end, go bigger: a second delivery costs far more than the step up.

Three sizing mistakes to avoid

  • Forgetting the rear door. Every one of our bins opens at the back, so you can walk long items in and stack neatly. A well-stacked bin holds remarkably more than a thrown-in one — take ten minutes to pack and you may drop a whole size.
  • Mixing heavy and light waste blindly. Soil, concrete and bricks eat your volume fast and add serious weight. If the job is mostly heavy material, say so when you book so we can advise on loading it low and level.
  • Booking the bin before the demo starts. Line delivery up with the messy days, not a week early. A bin sitting full on the driveway while you wait for the next stage helps nobody — time it with your project.

When a skip isn't the answer

Sometimes the pile doesn't justify a bin at all. A single couch, one dead appliance or a lone mattress is a job for our single-item pickup — cheaper and faster than a whole skip. And if you'd rather do the tip run yourself, cage trailer hire covers garden waste, firewood and moving jobs. Read our guide on what goes in a skip before you start loading.

The two-minute sizing call

Still torn between sizes? That's what the phone call is for. Describe the job, mention your driveway access — our smaller trucks fit the tight ones — and we'll recommend the right bin, arrange delivery from Hornby across Christchurch and Canterbury, and confirm pickup timing. Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 7:30pm, on 027 446 1253.
